So what actually makes the bottom exercise more advanced?

There are many ways we can progress a movement — here are 4 of them:

• Increase the lever length
• Increase the range of motion
• Reduce the base of support
• Increase control & balance demands

Advanced doesn’t simply mean “harder.” It means increasing the biomechanical, stability, strength or coordination demands of the movement.

Why your all-fours cueing isn’t landing (and what to do about it)

You’re using amazing cues — anatomically sound, beautifully worded. And your client is still somewhere else entirely: wrists sinking, shoulders creeping up, lower back swaying.

It’s not about you, promise. Time to change the tactic.

The usual fixes — “tuck your tailbone,” “pull your belly in” — fight the body instead of working with it. Here’s what actually works:

→ Anatomy first. Know where the load travels — wrist to shoulder, spine to pelvis — before you cue anything.

→ Tactile cueing. A light hand between the shoulder blades or a gentle press through the shoulder tells the nervous system something words never will. Always ask before you touch, and offer a 1-2-1 where possible — every body is different.

→ Gaze. Where the eyes go, the spine follows. A soft gaze just past the fingertips keeps the whole line honest.

When words stop landing, that’s not failure — it’s information. Switch from verbal to tactile.

Which one are you? 👇

🫁 1. Shallow chest breather
Your shoulders and upper chest do most of the work. This pattern is often associated with stress, tension or inefficient breathing.

🫁 2. Tummy (belly) breather
Your abdomen expands as you inhale. This is a natural breathing pattern at rest and allows the diaphragm to move freely.

🫁 3. Lateral breather (the Pilates way)
Your rib cage expands sideways and backwards while maintaining appropriate trunk support. This breathing pattern helps you breathe efficiently during movement without losing stability.

Are you a chest breather or a tummy breather? If so, it’s worth taking a closer look at your breathing pattern.

In Pilates, we teach lateral breathing because it helps you expand your rib cage while maintaining trunk support during movement.

When your diaphragm moves efficiently, it works together with your pelvic floor, deep abdominal muscles and the muscles surrounding your spine to help regulate pressure within your trunk. This coordinated system provides stability, supports your spine and allows you to move with greater control.

Efficient breathing isn’t just about getting air in—it’s about creating the right conditions for your body to stabilise before it moves.

That’s why breathing is one of the first things we teach. It can improve your posture, movement quality and overall control.

Mobility without stability is instability.
Stability without mobility creates restriction.

This integrated Reformer exercise — Z-Sit Rotational Reach — trains both.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Seated in a Z-sit position with strap in hand, as the trunk rotates, one arm generates movement against the resistance while the other reaches overhead. Throughout, your deep core and scapular stabilisers stay switched on — giving the movement a stable base to rotate from.

The result?
