Level 3, Ofqual or Independent? Understanding Pilates Teacher Training Qualifications
"Is it Level 3?" is the question we're asked more than any other. The honest answer is no, and this post explains exactly what that means, why it isn't the whole story, and what you should compare instead.
If you're weighing up different Pilates teacher training routes, you've probably noticed a confusing mix of labels: Level 3, Ofqual regulated, RQF, accredited, independently certified. Some courses lead with the level. Others lead with the method, the hours or the people teaching it. It's easy to assume the label tells you everything about the quality of the training. It doesn't, and understanding why will help you choose well.

What "Level 3" and "Ofqual regulated" actually mean
A regulated Level 3 qualification is one awarded by an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation and placed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Ofqual regulates qualifications, exams and assessments in England, and every regulated qualification has its own qualification number.
The "Level" describes difficulty, not length or depth of specialism. Level 3 sits at roughly the same difficulty as an A level. Two Level 3 courses can differ enormously in hours, practical time and how much Pilates-specific education they contain.
Regulation is about the qualification system: consistent assessment, quality assurance and an external awarding body. It doesn't define a particular approach to Pilates, and it doesn't guarantee how much time you'll spend on the equipment or with an experienced educator.
Is Pilates itself regulated in the UK?
No. There is no statutory regulator and no single official governing body for Pilates in the UK. Ofqual regulates qualifications, not the Pilates profession, and a Level 3 label doesn't change that.
In practice, this means no single body decides who can teach Pilates or what a Pilates education must include. The responsibility for depth and quality sits with each training provider, which is why who trains you, and how, matters more than any label on the certificate.
What an independent Pilates qualification is
An independent qualification is designed, delivered, assessed and certified by the training provider itself. There is no external awarding body and no RQF qualification number.
This is not unusual in Pilates. Many of the world's best-known Pilates education schools issue their own certifications, built around their own curriculum and assessment standards. Their reputation rests on the quality of their graduates, not on a framework level.
Independent doesn't automatically mean better, either. It means the responsibility for quality sits squarely with the provider, so you should look closely at what they teach, who teaches it and how they assess you. The best test of all is their graduates: ask where they're teaching now, how confident they felt after qualifying, and whether you can take a class with one.
What to compare beyond the label
Whichever route you're considering, ask every provider the same questions. A clear, direct answer to each is a good sign in itself.
Is it Ofqual regulated, and who is the awarding body? A good provider will give you a straight answer. Ours is in the table below.
What will I be qualified to teach? Mat, Reformer, other apparatus, one-to-one, groups.
How is it delivered? Face-to-face, online or blended, and how many hours you'll actually spend on the equipment.
Who teaches it? Their background, training lineage and how long they've been educating teachers.
How am I assessed? Whether your practical teaching is observed and assessed, not just your written knowledge.
What are the entry requirements? Including what anatomy and physiology knowledge you need first.
What does it cost in total? Including any separate assessment, certification or resit fees.
Will I get insured? Always confirm this directly with your chosen insurer before you enrol.
What are the terms and conditions? Read them carefully before you sign up.
If you plan to teach in independent studios, privately or from your own space, what matters most is your insurer's acceptance and the quality of your training. That is exactly what an Evrimotion education is built for.

Where Evrimotion Academy stands
We offer two independently issued professional Pilates qualifications: Mat and Reformer. Our Mat Teacher Training is where we build the depth of anatomy and biomechanics, preparing you to teach both group and one-to-one sessions. Our Reformer Teacher Training is designed for professionals who already have that anatomy and biomechanics knowledge. Neither is Ofqual regulated, so we don't market them as Level 3. Here are the facts for both courses at a glance.

An existing Level 3 qualification can meet our Reformer entry requirements, but it doesn't create exemptions from the Reformer training itself. The practical Reformer education still needs to be completed. If you don't yet have that anatomy and biomechanics foundation, our Mat Teacher Training is the place to start.
What we focus on is the education. Across both courses, our approach is anatomy-, biomechanics- and movement-led. On the Mat course, that depth is built from the ground up. On the Reformer course, we build on the knowledge you already bring: rather than handing you a list of exercises, we teach you spring resistance, loading, movement principles, modifications, contraindications and programming, so you can teach the person in front of you safely and confidently. A qualification gets you a certificate. An education gets you a career.
The pathway: Mat, then Reformer
Depth comes from the order you learn in, not from cramming everything into one short course.
Mat Teacher Training, the foundation. Eight training days across three blocks. You build anatomy, biomechanics and movement principles in your own body first, and learn to teach both group and one-to-one sessions.
Reformer Teacher Training, the specialism. Four days, 28 hours, building on that foundation: spring resistance, loading, modifications, contraindications and programming on the equipment.
You can book both together as our Mat + Reformer bundle for £2,500, with deposit-plus-monthly payment plans available.
Who you'll learn from
Our teacher training is led by Ebru, Evrimotion's founder and lead educator. Her background is in pathology science, which is why our education starts with how the body actually works, not with a list of exercises.
Ebru is Polestar-trained and has more than 15,000 hours of teaching experience. In the past two and a half years alone, she has trained more than 180 Pilates teachers across the UK. Her teaching is practice-led: you move and feel each concept in your own body before you learn to teach it to someone else.
Choosing the right route for you
The best training route is the one that fits where you want to teach and how you want to teach. If you want a specialist, practice-led Pilates education with real depth in anatomy and biomechanics, that's what Evrimotion Academy offers. Start with our Mat Teacher Training to build that foundation, or join our Reformer Teacher Training if you already have it.
We would much rather be completely transparent about the type of qualification we offer than have anyone enrol on an assumption. If you have questions about our Mat or Reformer training, or want to talk through how it compares with other options you're considering, email us at Evrimotion Academy and we'll give you a straight answer.
